A 17-year-old teenager, Rafael Harvey, is facing several charges, including a murder charge. Police are on the lookout for his accomplice.
The teen and another unidentified person shot two men during what police say was an attempted carjacking at a Citgo gas station in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago on Tuesday, January 3.
Harvey has been charged with several felony crimes, including first-degree murder, attempted carjacking, and attempted first-degree murder, after he and his companion allegedly shot two men in their car outside the gas station at around 2:30 am on Tuesday.
One of the men was killed and the other was seriously injured.
At the time of the Thursday court hearing, Harvey was in the hospital due to a gunshot wound in his shoulder, and was not able to attend. The judge set his bond at $1 million.
Authorities have not identified or arrested the accomplice they believe accompanied Harvey.
According to Anne McCord Rodgers, the Assistant State Attorney, the two shooters attacked a 45-year-old man and a 36-year-old man.
Harvey and the other gunman pulled up to the Citgo gas station in a stolen Hyundai as the 36-year-old man was entering the convenience store.
Harvey and his accomplice waited until the shopper returned to his car, and proceeded to ambush the two men.
As the suspects were trying to open the car door, one of the men pulled out a gun and shot Harvey in his right shoulder. That resulted in a gun battle between the four, as Harvey and the other suspect unleashed their weapons and fired several rounds at both victims.
The 36-year-old man exited the vehicle with a .357 gun. The two assailants continued shooting, then fled the scene in the stolen car.
The 45-year-old man had several gunshot wounds and was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.
The 36-year-old man suffered gunshots to both legs and was transported to the same hospital. He survived the shooting and is in fair condition, according to the police.
Surveillance cameras around the gas station recorded the incident. Police were able to track the stolen Hyundai from the gas station using surveillance cameras and plate readers. They discovered that the vehicle had stopped at St. Bernard Hospital, where the unidentified accomplice dropped off Harvey.
According to Rodgers, police had received a complaint from Harvey’s girlfriend earlier in the day that he had threatened her with a gun.
Police located the stolen Hyundai a few houses down from Harvey’s home. A follow-up hearing was scheduled for January 12.
