A 5-year-old girl’s father is seeking justice after his daughter was mauled by a 50-pound dog on February 7.
The mother of the girl, Amanda Ruth Chalfant, and her two kids were in the Hortt Park playground area in Fort Lauderdale, Florida when a woman with a leashed brown dog approached them.
The woman said the dog was a nice, peaceful dog. She added that the puppy had just been recently rescued. The dog sprang on her daughter without warning and attacked her in the face.
The horrifying tragedy was recorded by surveillance cameras. The dog’s collar snapped as the owner pulled on it to try and stop the attack, according to the child’s father Florian Becker.
Becker said the dog owner attempted to wrestle the dog to the ground and free his daughter while the owner was also in shock. He claimed that following the incident, the owner ran and hid from the area.
The 5-year-old was taken right away to a local hospital in an ambulance. She received 40 to 50 stitches to her head, face, and shoulders in addition to 20 staples. The child was obviously upset and traumatized as a result.
“She’s a sweet little girl — she’s very strong and very thoughtful, but this is absolutely terrifying,” said the father. “This was near fatal. If my wife had not been there, this dog would’ve killed my daughter.”
The woman and her dog have been identified, according to Fort Lauderdale Vice Mayor Warren Sturman, though the woman’s name hasn’t been made public and it’s unclear whether charges will be filed against her. Her 6-year-old mixed-breed dog was seized by the Broward County Animal Care Division.
