An eight-year-old Australian boy from Sydney tragically died at a luxury resort hotel in Fiji last week.
The young boy and his parents were guests of Club Wyndham on Denarau Island. He was found unresponsive in the hotel’s flower garden on Thursday, February 9.
The child, later identified as Cairo Winitana, was found by another guest at the resort and rushed to a nearby hospital in Nadi, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy done on the boy confirmed that he died by electrocution.
Police confirmed the autopsy findings and said investigations were underway to find out how the boy was electrocuted.
Guests at the resort said the boy was playing in the garden, chasing frogs, when a live wire from a lamp post shocked him.
There have been claims that it was not the first time someone experienced an electric shock at the Fiji Club Wyndham resort.
In June last year, an Australian man staying at the resort took pictures showing evidence of light fixtures on a path that was wet from the rain. The man claimed he suffered a powerful electric shock when he touched one of the light fixtures.
He said he told the hotel staff about it but doesn’t know if they attended to the issue.
The resort said in a statement that it had located and roped off the area where the incident occurred and assured guests that there were no additional risks. They declined to comment on the allegations made by the Australian guest last year.
