Detroit police discovered the bodies of two of their fellow officers in their apartment.
The cops’ bodies were discovered in their Livonia apartment, according to the Detroit Police Department, and evidence gathered by detectives indicated that their murders were a murder-suicide.
At 4 p.m. on Sunday, Police Chief James White revealed the deaths. The press conference was conducted in the parking lot of the apartment complex where the incident occurred, at Six Mile Road and Farmington in Livonia.
Around 12:30 p.m., Livonia police responded to a request for a well-being check on the home. Arriving cops discovered two off-duty officers, a 26-year-old officer named Matthew Ethington II and a 22-year-old female officer identified as Maria Martin, dead at the residence with gunshot wounds.
According to the Livonia Police Department, officers also discovered an infant in the residence. The youngster was not harmed and was given to a family member.
Despite the fact that he and other officers from his agency were at the crime scene, Chief White stated that the Detroit Police Department would not handle the investigation. The Livonia Police Department is now in charge of the investigation.
At the briefing, Chief White described the incident as a “tragic and sad course of events.”
The Chief stated in a Facebook briefing that it seemed to be a domestic incident. He stated that preliminary investigations led them to assume it was a murder-suicide, and that there was no evidence to suggest otherwise.
According to autopsy data, Martin died from numerous gunshot wounds, while Ethington died from a single fatal shot.
Captain Greg Yon of the Livonia Police Department also expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and the Detroit Police Department.
