A 59-year-old Australian man was killed when he was attacked by a shark on a beach in New Caledonia, Australia.
The incident was caught on video by horrified spectators, but the footage was deemed too disturbing to be shared. Two lifeguards’ valiant attempts to save the injured man were also captured on video. After the attack, the two were seen frantically attempting to retrieve the victim from the ocean and bring him back to the beach.
The man was swimming when he was attacked by the shark, likely a tiger shark measuring over 13 feet in length, which bit him many times on the legs and arms.
He was taken out of the water by a man on a jet ski, but he was unresponsive.
The two lifeguards tried to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the injured man, but they were unable to revive him. With a blanket over him, he was loaded onto a stretcher and taken from the shore.
The victim, whose identity has not been released by authorities, was apparently on vacation alone when the attack occurred.
An adjacent restaurant’s balcony may have been the source of the food that lured the shark to the beach.
After a woman, 49, was attacked by a shark on January 29, the beach was closed for three days before Sunday’s fatal attack. Only a few feet away from the site of the Sunday attack, a woman named Bridgette Do lost her leg to a shark bite.
A few days after Do’s attack, a man was attacked in the same area, but he managed to get away.
