Family and friends nicknamed Crystal Paula Gonzalez, 56, the”dancing hiking queen” because she loved to hike and climb mountains and film herself on social media.
The California woman died moments after posting a video of herself hiking an icy slope on Mount Baldy in Eastern Los Angeles. She slipped and fell about 700 feet to her death on Sunday, February 5.
The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department released a statement and said they received a call from the California Emergency Services Office about an SOS message from a Garmin InReach device telling them that a person had an accident at the mountain.
The Sheriff’s department sent a helicopter to the scene and used GPS coordinates from Gonzalez’ device to locate her on the mountain.
Police said Gonzalez, who had fallen to a steep and icy hillside, was surrounded by fellow hikers who were trying to help her.
A medic went down to evaluate the woman’s condition and she was airlifted and transported to the hospital with substantial injuries.
Unfortunately, Gonzalez died before she was evacuated.
Before her deadly fall, Gonzalez had posted a short video of herself hiking the dangerous mountain on Facebook. She sounded enthusiastic about her hike as she recorded herself saying it was “go time” and that the hill was crowded.
A lot of ice rolled downhill past her, and the conditions became too dangerous for her to continue the hike, so she turned back. However, during her return to safety, the mom of four slipped and fell a few hundred feet down the mountain and hit a tree.
The Sheriff’s office said Gonzalez was the second person to die after sliding down the mountain during the past two weeks.
