On February 3, a teenage girl from Berkeley, New Jersey committed suicide after a video of her being attacked by bullies in her high school circulated on social media.
Adriana Kuch, 14, was a student at the Central Regional High School in Berkeley, New Jersey. She was found dead at her home two days after being physically assaulted, police said.
On February 1, a shocking video posted on social media showed Adriana walking with her boyfriend in the hallway of her high school, and being attacked by several students with a water bottle. The video clip, about 20 seconds long, shows one person yelling at the girl that she is a “stupid bitch” who deserved to be beaten up.
The attackers kicked, punched and pulled her hair as student witnesses laughed and recorded the bullying attack.
Kuch’s devastated dad, Michael Kuch, said that his daughter killed herself because of the humiliation the insensitive and reckless students put her through. The video was the last straw.
Mr. Kuch claimed that his daughter blacked out during the attack, but the school officials did not call 911 for help. Instead, they brought her to the nurse’s office.
Police arrested four girls and charged three with felony assault in the third degree and one with disorderly conduct.
The superintendent of the school district told reporters that the school officials did not call the police after the attack due to school policy. The protocol is to suspend the students and leave it up to the parents to press charges if they choose to.
Mr. Kuch, however, said the school should have filed a police report immediately and that he took his blood-covered daughter to the police station himself. He wants justice for his daughter and will not rest until the assailants’ families see their daughters pleading guilty to the charges.
Kuch also believes that the Ocean County School District should be held accountable for not dealing with bullying and harassment in their schools. He said his daughter was a victim of bullying several times before the last incident that led to her suicide.
Hundreds of students from the Central Regional High School held a walkout in protest of the school’s handling of the incident and demanded that authorities take action on bullying allegedly ignored by the school district.
