This week, actress Gwyneth Paltrow is on trial for a hit-and-run ski accident that occurred in Utah in 2016. According to reports, the celebrity will testify in her own defense.
Retired optometrist Terry Sanderson filed a lawsuit against actress Gwyneth Paltrow in 2019, asking for $3.1 million in damages for injuries he allegedly sustained in a 2016 ski accident in which he said Paltrow crashed into him while skiing out of control at a Park City, Utah resort.
The optometrist claims in his lawsuit that the crash left him with a traumatic brain injury, broken ribs, and a diminished capacity to enjoy life. But Paltrow’s legal team claims the man is making it up.
In 2021, Paltrow filed a countersuit claiming that Sanderson was at fault for the collision.
The trial, which will last for eight days and began on March 21 at a courthouse in Park City, will bring the two parties face to face.
In the lawsuit filed by Paltrow, it is stated that Sanderson, who is now 71 years old, disclosed to his doctor a year prior to the accident that he was blind in one eye.
In his defense, the man admitted that he cannot recall the details about the accident.
According to the lawsuit, Paltrow has a vivid recollection of the events of that day. While skiing, she says Sanderson rammed into her from above and knocked her off balance. Sanderson angered Paltrow, who demanded an apology.
Sanderson has 15 chronic health issues, including vision problems, according to Paltrow’s lawyers.
The plaintiff’s doctors ran a battery of cognitive tests on him after the accident and found no evidence of brain damage.
A judge dismissed Sanderson’s request for $3.1 million in punitive damages and limited his request for damages to $300,000.
Paltrow filed a symbolic $1 countersuit for damages and legal fees because she was not seriously hurt.
After the accident, the optometrist accused Paltrow of being “uncaring,” an accusation the actress strongly refuted.
Lawyers for Paltrow criticized the doctor, noting that he had traveled internationally multiple times after the accident despite his claims of serious injuries.
