Authorities said a young man from California visiting Majorca with his girlfriend died after jumping off a cliff and slamming into the rocks.
According to a local media source, the 26-year-old man died while on vacation. The couple were visiting Cala Varques Bay, east of Majorca, when the tragedy occurred at approximately 1:50 p.m. on Saturday, March 25.
Local police are still investigating the accident, but it is believed that the man miscalculated his jump from a 40-foot cliff and landed on the rocks below instead of in the water.
The incident was witnessed by people on a nearby sailboat, who quickly arrived to assist the victim. They called for help, but by the time they arrived, the man had stopped breathing. They brought him to shore, where medical personnel tried to revive him.
According to local news reports, police, maritime rescue teams, and a helicopter were dispatched to the scene after being called, but they were unable to save the man.
Because of the dangerous cliff jumps, serious accidents occur too often at Cala Varques Bay.
The bay is a popular location for climbing without a safety line.
The nearby Rock Bridge is a popular cliff-jumping location and photo taking spot.
Locals say the jump can be miscalculated because the water hides the rocks from sight.
Also, when something goes wrong in the bay, rescue crews can take up to 50 minutes to arrive. There are extremely slim chances of surviving serious accidents there.
Officials have repeatedly warned people not to jump off the cliffs.
Cala Varques Bay is approximately 2.5 miles from Cales de Majorca. Because the bay is located on a nature reserve, it is isolated and difficult to get to for rescue workers.
A 17-year-old boy was injured there last June when he jumped from a high cliff.
