Dick Van Dyke told reporters he is sore all over his body from his recent car crash in Malibu and even showed them some injuries he sustained from the unfortunate accident.
The Mary Poppins star, 97, was seen with his wife, Arlene Silver, 51, and a friend. Van Dyke showed off two stitches on his chin after last week’s accident.
In a video taken on Friday, March 24, the star pointed out that he was fine but sore all over, and assured everyone that he was recovering well.
Van Dyke joked about how he sustained the injuries on his chin, telling the reporter that the airbags in his Lexus did not deploy when he smashed into the gate, so he had his face planted straight on the steering wheel, which made him a little dumber, he said.
Flashing his infamous grin, Van Dyke dismissed the concerns about his well-being, assuring the reporters that he was doing okay. He told them that he was, after all, 97 and all his friends were dead.
The star reiterated previous statements he has made, saying he was grateful to still be alive and that he was still having fun.
Van Dyke crashed his silver Lexus into a Malibu gate while driving on March 15. The road was wet and slippery from the heavy rains experienced in California, which might have been why he lost control of the wheel.
Photos taken at the scene of the accident show the celebrated actor with a bloody mouth and nose. Paramedics treated his injuries but he refused to be taken to the hospital, so a friend picked him up at the scene and took him home. The actor appeared in great spirits despite the accident.
Police said they did not think alcohol and drugs had anything to do with the accident but they did stipulate that Van Dyke retake his driving test.
About a decade ago, Van Dyke was involved in another accident that ended with his car catching on fire and burning to an empty shell.
In 2013, Van Dyke noticed smoke coming from the hood of his car while driving. He pulled over and was rescued by a Good Samaritan just before his car went up in flames.
