On Monday evening, March 6, an employee at a Dunkin’ Donuts in Clearwater, Florida was accused of shooting and critically injuring a father of two.
Khalil Abdul Shakur Shaheed, a 22-year-old Dunkin’ Donuts worker from St. Petersburg, was taken into custody by the Clearwater Police Department after he shot a customer outside the shop.
The employee reportedly had a disagreement with Jewitt Steele, 38, as he was leaving the store after buying ice cream for his two young children and girlfriend.
Monday night, just after 6 o’clock, the victim’s girlfriend called police to report that Steele had been shot at the Dunkin’ Donuts. In the recording, she can be heard assuring his two kids that their dad is fine and won’t die.
Police were told by eyewitnesses that while Steele and his family left through the front door, the suspect exited through the back door. They got into an argument after he cornered Steele in the parking lot and began confronting him.
Chief Daniel Slaughter addressed the media, saying that both parties involved were strangers and that investigators were still trying to piece together what happened in the parking lot.
Chief Slaughter stated that the employee drew a firearm and began firing. He fired three times, twice striking the victim in the legs (the right upper thigh and the left knee). Officers quickly arrived and took Steele to the Bayfront Health Center to receive treatment for his gunshot wounds.
Chief Slaughter claims the police had no way of rationally explaining what had happened and therefore believed they were missing a substantial amount of information. He assured the media that once they interviewed Steele after he was treated, they would have a much clearer picture.
Shaheed was taken into custody by police in a nearby parking lot, with the weapon still in his possession. According to Chief Slaughter, the suspect likely obtained the firearm in a lawful manner.
Shaheed was arrested and charged with both aggravated battery and concealed carry of a firearm.
