Officials in the Virgin Islands have been investigating the death of a former American athlete, since earlier this year.

Jamie Cail, 42, was discovered unresponsive at her home and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital, according to a news release from the US Virgin Islands Police Department.

Cail, a former swimming champion who won multiple titles in major tournaments in the 1990s and 2000s, moved to the Virgin Islands and worked at a coffee shop in St. John, according to her relatives.

The swimmer was originally from Claremont, New Hampshire.

Cail’s boyfriend, Kamal Thomas, arrived at their home around midnight and discovered her unresponsive on the floor, according to authorities. He had returned home from a nearby tavern to check on his girlfriend, according to the press release.

Thomas stated that he and a friend carried the 42-year-old woman to a nearby car and rushed her to the hospital.

Cail was immediately given CPR by staff at the Myrah Keating-Smith Clinic, but she was unable to be revived. On arrival, medics pronounced her dead.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau, a division of the police department, is now looking into her death.

Police have not officially identified Thomas, but numerous sources on the island and in the U.S. call him Kamal “Six Pack” Thomas. He is a 34-year-old man from Georgia who was in prison in the past for the 2007 murder of a Pennsylvania man.

Cail’s love of swimming began as a child. Throughout 1998 and 1999, she competed in freestyle and butterfly competitions. She went on to compete for the United States in the FINA Swimming World Cup and the Pan Pacific Championships.

She won a gold medal in the Pan Pacific Championships and a silver medal at the FINA Swimming World Cup, according to FINA, currently known as World Aquatics.

Cail was a member of the University of Maine women’s swim team during the 2000-2001 season before graduating in 2003.
