Ivanka Trump, the daughter of former President Donald Trump, is attempting to distance herself from the allegations leveled against her and her two brothers, Donald Trump, Jr. and Eric Trump, in the $250 million fraud lawsuit filed against the Trump Organization.
Ivanka’s attorney, Reid Figel, sent a letter to the New York Supreme Court on Monday, requesting that the judge acknowledge that his client left the family business in 2017 and that the allegations made against her were distinct from those made against her father, brothers, and the Trump Organization.
Attorney Figel, discussing the lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James in September 2022, stated that there was no allegation that Ivanka created, reviewed, prepared, or certified her father’s financial statements, either directly or indirectly.
The letter emphasized that Ivanka’s legal and factual defenses are clearly different from those of the other individuals named.
Donald Trump and his three children are named as defendants in the civil fraud lawsuit, which accuses the organization of inflating property assets to encourage banks to lend the company more money. The lawsuit seeks damages of $250 million and an injunction prohibiting the four defendants from serving as officers or directors of any New York company permanently.
Judge Arthur Engoron, who will preside over the case, stated that he intends to begin the trial on October 2 as scheduled, despite the defendants’ numerous requests to postpone it for at least six months.
Experts argue that Ivanka’s assertion that she never prepared, reviewed, or certified any fraudulent financial documents could be interpreted as implying that her father and brothers did.
During the announcement of Attorney General James’ lawsuit, she claimed that Trump’s children assisted him in committing fraud and that the family repeatedly filed false records.
Donald Trump has denied the allegations on multiple occasions and claimed that James was conducting a “witch hunt” against him.
Since the September announcement, Ivanka’s response to the lawsuit has differed from that of her brothers. She refrained from publicly criticizing Attorney General James on social media and weighing in on the case. Her silence has been interpreted as an effort to distance herself from her father.
Ivanka announced her retirement from politics shortly after her father declared his candidacy for president in 2024, despite having held key positions in the Trump administration.
