On March 7, a judge in Andalusia, Spain issued an order directing a man to compensate his ex-wife for 200,000 Euros, amounting to approximately $218,000, in “back pay” for the 25 years of unpaid household labor she did during their marriage. The calculation was based on the Spanish minimum wage of about $525 per month.
The court ruled that Ivana Moral should be compensated by her husband for the time they were married because she managed the household and the raising of their children.
Because she was not the breadwinner, the wife would not be entitled to any of the couple’s assets under a separation of property regime agreement.
The judge agreed that the divorce would financially devastate the wife, who had spent the previous 25 years caring for the couple’s two daughters and managing the family home.
Additionally, because the children continued to live with the mother, the ex-husband was ordered to pay alimony and child support.
Despite his frequent requests for her assistance with his gym business, Ivana Moral stated that her husband preferred she not work outside the home.
She told the judge that she was prevented from pursuing her own interests and receiving professional training because she was a wife and mother. She claimed she had no experience outside of her husband’s gym job, housework, and raising their daughters that would prepare her for financial independence after the marriage ended.
The woman praised the judge’s decision.
The husband could not be reached for comment.
