It’s official. Lady Gaga is the new Harley Quinn.
The thirty-six-year-old pop star was seen filming several scenes for the new and upcoming Joker sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux, in New York City on Saturday, March 25.
She was filming the scenes at City Hall in Manhattan, where hundreds of extras stood on the building’s steps.
Gaga was dressed in full character, wearing a black and white harlequin-patterned blouse with a red jacket and a black skirt with black diamond-patterned leggings. The hair and makeup crew had slicked back Gaga’s blonde hair and put red clown-like makeup on her face and around her eyes, completing the Harley Quinn look.
Gaga’s involvement in the sequel was made public in June 2022. The Hollywood Reporter was the first to confirm that she was in talks with Warner Brothers to play Harley Quinn.
The pop star herself confirmed her casting for the role in August last year with an animated video of the silhouettes of Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix, who plays the Joker, dancing to some music.
In the sequel, 48-year-old Phoenix plays the legendary Batman villain, the Joker, and Gaga plays the part of his longtime love interest and henchwoman, Harley Quinn. According to the story, the two met years ago when Harley Quinn was the Joker’s psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum in the fictional Gotham City.
Harley Quinn’s character was first developed for the 1990s morning cartoon Batman: The Animated Series. She quickly became one of the favorite characters in the cartoon series, jumping from TV to comic books.
Warner brothers celebrated Valentine’s Day this year by releasing the first official image of Lady Gaga and Phoenix as the Joker and Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie a Deux.
The picture, which the pop star shared on her social media account, captures Harley Quinn and the Joker just moments after sharing a passionate kiss, with her signature red lipstick smudged all over the Joker’s face.
Margot Robbie is best known for bringing Harley Quinn’s character to life. Robbie played the character in Suicide Squad, released in 2016, its 2021 sequel, The Suicide Squad, and in Harley Quinn’s spinoff show Birds of Prey, released in 2021.
Robbie has said she is happy and honored that Gaga is playing Harley Quinn and hopes the iconic character can become even bigger and greater.
