Man Falls Three Escalator Flights at Madison Square Garden After Rangers Game

The son of a well-known restauranteur in New York City died after a freak fall from an escalator at Madison Square Garden after watching a Rangers hockey game on Saturday, March 18, police said.

Sixty-one-year-old Ernest Vogliano rode an escalator inside the massive arena when he fell down three floors.

According to his family and officials, the medical examiner ruled his death accidental.

Vogliano’s wife, Lena Vogliano, hired an attorney to investigate the matter, claiming that authorities kept her in the dark about the tragedy and how it happened.

Fred Eisenberg, the Vogliano family attorney, said the family did not know what happened to Vogliano, so they would have to review all available evidence.

The New York Police Department received 911 calls about an injured person at the arena at around 10:40 pm on Saturday. Responding officers found the man unresponsive and suffering from a head injury.

First responders rushed the 61-year-old man to Bellevue Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead.

The city medical examiner performed an autopsy on Vogliano and determined his cause of death to be blunt force trauma and an accident.

According to Attorney Eisenberg, the wife was not given details about her husband’s death, prompting him to send a demand letter to Madison Square Garden officials that all evidence of Vogliano’s death should be preserved.

The tragedy comes amid an investigation into Madison Square Garden owner James Dolan by the New York State Liquor Authority, which could result in the loss of liquor licenses for the arena, the Beacon Theater, and Radio City Music Hall, all popular tourist places in New York City.

Dolan has also been under fire for using facial recognition to bar “undesirable” fans from the venues, including lawyers.

However, a Madison Square Garden representative said that Vogliano’s death was tragic but did not have any connection with the ongoing liquor investigation.

Vogliano was the son of the late Ernest Vogliano, Sr., the longtime owner of II Vagabondo restaurant, a popular Italian eatery, before it closed down.
