At around 6:50 a.m. on Tuesday, March 8, a man in Southern California was fatally mauled by four dogs on a property where he was working. The Riverside County Department of Animal Services (RCDAS) confirmed the man’s employment at the private property in Jurupa Valley in a news release. Mateo Salvador, 42, has been identified as the victim.
Deputies from the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department arrived at the scene at around 7:30 a.m. after a 911 caller reported hearing screams. The victim was found seriously injured and died shortly after being taken to a hospital.
The property owner was not at home at the time of the attack, according to the RCDAS, but later surrendered the three Belgian Malinois breeds and one Cane Corso to animal services for humane euthanasia on Tuesday afternoon.
RCDAS Director Erin Gettis described the mauling as a tragic reminder that dog owners must keep their dogs locked up and leashed.
The area is walled in and has several signs alerting visitors to the presence of dogs, but workers frequently leave the gates open, allowing the animals to break free. A neighbor told the press that she always keeps her gate closed because she has small children. She claims the dogs are dangerous and chase cars and students walking to the nearby high school.
After the incident, two other dogs were discovered on the property. According to authorities, none of the animals were registered or had evidence of vaccination.
Officers are currently deciding whether or not to charge the dog owner.
