A Canadian dad was stabbed to death outside a Starbucks in Vancouver after asking his attacker to stop vaping in front of his three-year-old daughter.
Paul Stanley Schmidt was standing outside a Starbucks in Vancouver with his daughter Erica, 3, when the tragedy unfolded on Sunday, March 26. It was around 5:30 pm and his fiancée Ashley Umali was inside the shop getting drinks when Schmidt was stabbed, according to his mother, Kathy Schmidt.
The horrifying moment caught on video showed Schmidt suddenly being stabbed, clutching his abdomen, and falling to the ground as his daughter watched in horror. The video has been circulated on social media, to the dismay of the family.
Schmidt’s mother told a local news outlet that the suspect, later identified as Inderdeep Singh Gosa, 32, attacked her son after he asked him not to vape in front of his daughter.
She said the three-year-old, who had witnessed the whole thing, was still in shock.
Authorities charged Gosa with second-degree murder, but Schmidt’s family called for the charges to be upgraded to first-degree murder, which requires proof that the attacker premeditated the stabbing.
The grieving mom said she was shocked that no one rushed to help her son, with many bystanders just taking videos and not calling for help.
According to the police, an officer was flagged down at around 5:40 pm after the stabbing. The suspect was still in the area and did not resist arrest.
Police are still investigating a motive for the killing and asked anyone with a video to turn it over to the police.
The family also urged the public to stop sharing the video of the brutal attack.
