A man has been arrested in Oklahoma on suspicion of throwing a woman off a balcony on the fourth floor of an apartment building.
Tulsa police began receiving 911 calls about a woman who had fallen into the courtyard of Hewgley Terrace Apartments, an apartment complex located near South Houston Avenue and West Seventh Street in Tulsa, around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 18.
According to a press release from the Tulsa Police Department, firefighters arrived first and discovered the woman on the ground. Officers from the department arrived several minutes later.
The unidentified woman was severely injured in the fall and had multiple broken bones. First responders rushed her to a local hospital, where she was said to be in critical condition.
Investigators immediately went to work to determine whether the woman had jumped or fallen, and they discovered that the incident was neither a suicide attempt or an accident, but that she had been thrown off the building on purpose by a man.
Officers discovered surveillance video of the incident, which showed a man carrying the woman, wrapped in a blanket, out of an apartment and toward a common area on the fourth floor.
The woman appeared unresponsive as she was being carried out, according to the police.
No one was in the common area at the time because it was so early in the morning, but the footage showed the man holding the woman in his arms and walking to the edge of a balcony.
The man, later identified as Richard Wallace by police, then threw her off the balcony, and she fell to the ground below.
The suspect then quickly exited the balcony and returned to the apartment. According to the press release, Wallace initially refused to leave his apartment, but after a brief standoff with cops, he eventually opened the door and cooperated with them.
Wallace was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault and battery.
The suspect was taken to the Tulsa County Jail and was arraigned in court on March 24, according to police records.
