A 17-year-old Michigan boy was shot dead by two younger boys, ages 13 and 14, after offering them a ride on the road in the freezing weather, after he left his girlfriend’s birthday party.
A little after midnight on January 17, first responders discovered Jack Snyder, 17, lying on the ground next to his car after he was gunned down during an attempted carjacking by the two younger boys.
When officers discovered Snyder on the ground in Battle Creek, Michigan, they attempted CPR but were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 14-year-old, later identified as Justice James Chimner, and the 13-year-old, who turned himself in but has not been publicly identified, were arrested.
Investigators have recovered a gun that they believe was used in the murder, but it is unclear which of the boys fired it.
Snyder died as a result of his big heart, according to Sergeant Jeff Case of the Battle Creek Police Department.
Snyder, he claimed, was attempting to assist the boys by offering them a ride in his car, but the boys turned on him and attempted to carjack him.
Snyder was most likely fighting them off when he was killed.
Sergeant Chris Rabbitt stated that the department had received numerous tips and that surveillance footage from multiple locations had helped them track and identify the suspects’ movements.
Chimner, 14, was charged as an adult with murder, two weapons-related charges, and carjacking on Sunday, February 19. If convicted, he faces life in prison.
The 13-year-old was charged with homicide, felony first-degree murder, and carjacking. The two boys had no known relationship with the victim.
Snyder, a senior at Battle Creek Central High School, was described as an athlete and National Honor Society member.
Snyder had a zest for life and loved and cared for everyone, according to the obituary. In a Facebook post, his sister called the boys who murdered Snyder “monsters,” adding that Jack had the biggest heart.
