The most recent Amazon Prime Video series, “Swarm,” includes an episode that was co-written by Barack and Michelle Obama’s 24-year-old daughter Malia. She made her television writing debut and has been praised for her exceptional storytelling that combines horror with a strange, darkly humorous plot. Donald Glover and Janine Nabers are the creators of the thriller series, which aired on Friday, March 17.
“Swarm” is an eight-part thriller about an obsessive follower of a Beyoncé-inspired pop star. The talented Dominque Fishback gives an amazing performance as Dre, the super fan who would do anything, to protect her adored celebrity Ni’jah, superbly played by Nirine S. Brown.
Co-creator Nabers, who just announced that Malia Obama co-wrote Episode 5 of the series, dubbed “Girl, Bye,” commended the Obamas’ oldest daughter for her work on the suspenseful series. According to Nabers, who spoke to Entertainment Today, some of her ideas were fantastic, funny and rather wild. She described Malia as a really talented writer who contributed a lot and someone who is incredibly diligent and committed to her work.
The pivotal episode, “Girl, Bye,” was written by Obama and Nabers and comes at about halfway in the mini-series.
In 2014, the former first child began working as a production assistant on the Halle Berry-starring series “Extant.” She later worked as an intern on Lena Dunham’s “Girls,” a year after being hired as a production assistant. In March 2022, Glover hired Obama as a staff writer for “Swarm.”
According to Nabers, they wanted to give Obama a chance to get her feet wet in TV and see if she wanted to continue doing this. The Harvard graduate has also received acclaim from Glover. He commended her writing abilities and work ethic. Last year he had nothing but praise for her, describing her as an unbelievably talented person who is motivated and well-focused.
