Three people died in Washington DC, including a Lyft driver and two other people he had picked up after a night out, when an SUV slammed into them while fleeing a traffic stop, according to a police report.
The grieving families of the victims are demanding justice for their loved ones and answers from authorities as to why the SUV driver, who had over $12,000 in unpaid traffic tickets, was out on the road.
One of the victims, Olvin Torres Velasquez, 23, who worked at a restaurant in Arlington, Virginia, finished his 14-hour shift on Tuesday, March 14, and told his coworkers he was excited to get home and watch the soccer team of his home country, Honduras, play that night.
Velasquez was disappointed after watching his team lose, so he and his friend, Jonathan Cabrera Mendez, decided to go out for a bite in DC, according to Velasquez’s relatives.
After having fun on their night out, the pair called the Lyft early Wednesday morning, and their driver was Mohamed Kamara, 42.
Kamara picked the pair up, and as they were driving on the Rock Creek Parkway, an SUV driving at a very high speed slammed into Kamara’s Honda and killed all three occupants.
According to the police, the SUV driver was fleeing a traffic stop. Two SUV occupants were taken to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police have not yet released the identity of the SUV driver.
According to traffic records, the SUV owner raked up $12,300 in unpaid traffic violations, with most of the citations for speeding.
The tragedy sparked discussions about whether the city should do more to bar such repeat offenders from driving and putting everyone else’s lives in danger.
Washington, DC Councilman Charles Allen called for the district to lower the threshold for reckless driving.
Kamara’s brother, Mohamed Fofana, said the crash involving a repeat offender revealed a lapse in the system and asked authorities to do something about it.
