Police said a man was in custody in connection with a crash in a Phoenix suburb that killed two bicyclists and injured 11 others.
Pedro Quintana-Lujan, 26, was held on suspicion of two counts of manslaughter, three counts of aggravated assault, 18 counts of endangering, and two counts of inflicting significant harm or death, according to Goodyear police. He was later released without being charged, pending further investigation.
On February 25, at about 8 a.m., a pickup vehicle pulling a trailer crashed with a large group of Arizona bikers near the Cotton Lane Bridge. The bridge is located around 19 miles west of Phoenix.
According to a police spokesperson, Lisa Berry, the suspect, Quintana-Lujan, remained at the scene of the accident and cooperated with authorities in their inquiry into the crash.
Berry stated that the first fatality was a female bicyclist who died at the scene, while the second victim died in a hospital.
Court documents said Quintana-Lujan told police his “steering locked and the truck started drifting.” He admitted to having smoked marijuana several hours before the crash. No charges were filed.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 932 cyclists killed in motor vehicle collisions in the United States in 2020.
