It is common to hear the question, “Why did the chicken cross the road?” But this time, this club’s residents are asking, why did the alligator cross our perfectly manicured lawns? Where did he come from?
A 10-foot-long alligator was spotted crossing the road at the Forest Glen Golf & Country Club in Naples, Florida, causing terror to the upscale neighborhood’s residents. The scene took place on Friday, March 17, and seemed straight out of a Jurassic Park movie.
The video taken with a mobile phone was posted on Facebook by WINK meteorologist Matt Devitt. A woman can be heard screaming “Dios mio!” which is Spanish for “My God!”
Experts have said that alligators appearing on areas such as roads and residential places is common at this time of the year. They say this is due to the species’ increase in activity in the spring, especially because it is just before their mating season begins.
The club’s website says that it offers a community of friendly people, a safe space for fitness, paved paths for biking and strolling and programs for golf, tennis, pickleball, and bocce. Top quality dining “in the serenity of a nature preserve” is also available, which may now be taken quite literally.
They said that the “big guy” must have come from the nearby river. The Florida Fish & Wildlife Department was able to safely remove it from the neighborhood and no injuries were reported among the residents.
According to reports, there are around 1.3 million alligators living in all 67 counties of Florida. Reported attacks are rare but everyone is told to be vigilant of alligators, especially those that are more than four feet long.
