A couple driving on an interstate in Colorado said that their near-fatal car accident was caused by a big pothole in the road.
A car driving behind them at the time of the accident caught the whole thing on its dashboard camera.
The couple said that the pothole made their camper trailer, which they were pulling with their pickup, spin out of control. They said that the trouble didn’t end there because the police who came to the scene of the accident gave them a ticket for reckless driving even though they hadn’t broken any laws.
When the accident happened, Thomas Kuemmel and his fiancee Leslie Brock said they were driving east on Interstate 70 toward Denver at less than the speed limit. They were getting close to the Loveland Ski Area when all of a sudden they felt out of control. Then they knew something wasn’t right.
Brock, who was sitting next to the driver, in the front seat, told the media that everything was fine one minute and then the trailer started to bounce after hitting the pothole, which made them lose control of their pickup truck.
Brock said it was scary, and she was afraid she was going to die.
The driver said he felt a big jolt, and then the trailer started knocking into the pickup truck. He lost control and spun out on the road.
When the Colorado State Patrol showed up, they thought Kuemmel and his fiancee were driving recklessly on purpose. This made things even worse for them. The driver tried to tell the troopers that the crash happened because of a big pothole. Even though they tried to persuade the officer that it wasn’t their fault, the officer gave them a ticket.
Ironically, just two days after the accident, the Colorado Transportation Department shut down the highway to fix a huge pothole in the same location.
Brock and Kuemmel said that the accident would not have happened if the pothole had been fixed sooner.
After the story was in the news on Wednesday, readers and viewers contacted Problem Solvers to say that the potholes on that part of I-70 had been a problem for a long time.
Kuemmel will go to court in May to fight the ticket that was given to him. Hopefully, he will have access to the dashcam from the car behind him.
