A Tennessee woman managed to escape after her abusive boyfriend allegedly locked her up in the closet of a vacant home for about eight weeks, authorities said.
Police in Dyersburg, Tennessee, found the victim, only identified as a 40-year-old woman, hiding under an unfinished home on a construction site in the area on Saturday. She told them she broke free from captivity and asked a passerby to call the police.
When responding officers from the Dyersburg Police Department found the woman she looked emaciated, weighing less than 100 pounds, and had cuts all over her face. She told cops that her boyfriend, Brenton Bell, 30, had kidnapped her and forced her into a closet in a nearby empty house eight weeks earlier.
According to the woman, Bell shut the doors with a locking device and reinforced them with a cable. She told police that her sadistic boyfriend had only allowed her out of the closet for one hour daily and provided her with little to no food.
The woman also said the house had no bathroom that she could use during her stay. Officers quickly located the empty house from her description and said that they found a lot of human waste on the grounds.
The victim told officers that she and Bell had been in a relationship, but he had become increasingly abusive toward her before eventually kidnapping her and locking her up in the closet.
The woman was released after being treated for her wounds at the West Tennessee Healthcare Center in Dyersburg. She will also be given domestic violence aid, according to authorities.
Police are still looking for the alleged perpetrator of aggravated kidnapping, whose whereabouts are unknown. Bell is described as a 5’5″ black man weighing about 150 pounds.
The woman was found a day after police found a 13-year-old girl who had been missing for several days from her home in Texas in a man’s shed in North Carolina.
The girl had reportedly started communicating with the man through social media before he abducted her and took her over 1,000 miles away.
Authorities managed to find her and to take the suspect, Jorge Ivan Camacho, 34, into custody. He has been charged with eight felonies.
