A man from Brooklyn Center died after being attacked by four dogs he cared for while the owners were away.
According to the Brooklyn Center Police Department, the attack occurred on Thursday, April 13, at a home on the 5700 block of Halifax Avenue North. The department got a call from a neighbor reporting that a man was screaming for help as he was attacked by dogs.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office performed an autopsy on the victim and identified him as 22-year-old Dezmond Thomas Trawick. The office also ruled Trawick’s death accidental.
According to police, the attack was still ongoing when officers arrived. A responding officer fired a less-lethal round which hit one of the dogs. The round also dispersed the other dogs.
According to officers at the scene, the dogs had viciously attacked the victim, ripping off most of his clothing. Trawick was also bitten all over his body by the dogs. First responders intubated Trawick at the scene and rushed him to North Memorial Medical Center, where he was treated for his wounds.
However, the police were informed later that Trawick had succumbed to his injuries.
According to a police news release, the four dogs involved in the attack were of the American Pit Bull Terrier breed. The police said the dogs did not live at the house where the attack occurred but were there for the day. Trawick was watching the dogs for a family member.
Investigators are now in contact with the dogs’ owners, and authorities could file criminal charges against them. Police said they do not know of any previous incidents involving the dogs.
The four animals are currently being held at Pets Under Police Security (PUPS), a facility utilized by police departments to house animals while they determine their fates. It is still unclear whether the dogs will be euthanized.
The police are still investigating the incident.
