Passengers rarely fall from a cruise ship’s balcony, especially into the water. According to data provided for Cruise Lines International Association by consulting firm G.P. Wild (International) Limited, there were 126 minor injuries and 292 serious injuries to passengers or crew members aboard cruise ships between 2009 and 2019.
In 2022, a Carnival cruise ship passenger described his 20-hour adventure treading water in the Gulf of Mexico. The night before Thanksgiving, on November 24, James Michael Grimes, a resident of Alabama, vanished after falling from the Carnival Valor cruise ship into the water. Grimes left the bar during the five-day trip from Cozumel to Mexico to use the restroom. He claimed that he could no longer see the ship when he awoke in the ocean. Grimes was saved by a U.S. Coast Guard vessel 20 miles from the Southwest Pass on the Mississippi River. He had struggled to remain alive for 20 hours until he was discovered.
