A former police officer from Huntsville, Alabama, has been indicted for capital murder for the fatal shooting of his pregnant girlfriend.
David McCoy, 29, was charged with three capital murder counts, including killing someone inside a car, killing someone and her unborn baby, and killing a person under 14, referring to the unborn child. McCoy appeared before a judge on April 4.
According to authorities, Courtney Spraggins was pregnant with McCoy’s child and had gone to the Weston Ranch Apartments on January 7, 2022, because she planned to move into McCoy’s apartment.
However, she couldn’t move in because he was living with another woman. He asked her to give him more time, so she returned to Maryland.
Eventually, McCoy told Spraggins he was ready to care for her and their unborn baby. Spraggins, ready to give it another shot with McCoy, arrived in Huntsville, Alabama on January 7, and the two went for a drive in his truck. They got back to the apartment complex at about 9:40 am the same day. Spraggins returned to her vehicle, and that was when McCoy shot her.
After the shooting, McCoy changed clothes and threw his gun in the closet, according to investigators. He then called the Huntsville Police Department and asked the dispatcher if they had received any calls about shots fired in the area.
McCoy, who was off-duty at the time of the shooting, allegedly told 911 dispatchers that it appeared the victim had committed suicide.
When responding officers arrived, they saw a photo of McCoy in the vehicle and realized he knew the victim.
McCoy finally admitted to shooting the pregnant woman in the head. He also tested positive for gunshot residue, and police found a pistol, which was not his service weapon, and the victim’s locked phone in his apartment.
Prosecutors will reportedly seek the death penalty.
