A Florida judge decided in favor of British Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, in the defamation lawsuit brought by her estranged half-sister Samantha Markle.
Samantha Markle filed a lawsuit against Meghan Markle in federal court in Florida for allegedly making defamatory remarks about her during Prince Harry and Meghan’s March 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.
After Meghan revealed to Oprah that she was raised as an only child, Samantha was upset and decided to sue for $75,000.
The half-sister claimed that the remarks had made her feel humiliated.
A Florida judge did not share that opinion and dismissed the entire case, ruling that Meghan was free to express her opinion and that it was not possible to refute the veracity of her statements.
According to US District Judge Charlene Edwards Honeywell’s report, the defendant had opinions about her upbringing, her father, and her relationships with her half-sibling. As a result, the court is unable to independently dispute her claims.
According to Samantha Markle, Meghan had created a false “rags to riches” narrative about her life. She said Meghan had orchestrated a campaign to damage her reputation and their father’s credibility.
Samantha’s lawyer, Peter Ticktin, said that Meghan decided to slam her sister and father because she had been caught in a lie about her upbringing. He said that Meghan’s false narrative hurt his client.
Michael Kump, Meghan’s attorney, declared that the plaintiff lacked legal justification for bringing a defamation claim against his client. He demanded that the case be dropped.
The judge agreed.
Before the Oprah interview in 2021, the half-sisters had been distant from one another for a long time.
