A 16-month-old child was shot dead by his five-year-old sibling inside an apartment in Indiana, according to police.
The Lafayette Police Department received a 911 call about a shooting at an apartment building in Lafayette, Indiana, at around 3 pm local time on Tuesday, March 28.
The police said that the five-year-old child somehow got hold of the gun, which was loaded and unsecured, inside the apartment and fired at the baby, instantly killing him.
Responding officers found the infant dead with a gunshot wound inside the apartment.
Police identified the victim as Isiah Johnson.
According to multiple news reports, police were called by someone outside the apartment, who told dispatchers that a shooting had just occurred and that a child was unresponsive and not breathing.
Responding officers pronounced the infant dead at the scene.
Speaking to a local news outlet, Lafayette Police Lieutenant Matt Gard said that one adult and two children were inside the house at the time of the tragic shooting. Officer Gard also told the outlet that he did not believe any life-saving measures were taken at the scene.
According to the County Coroner, Carrie Costello, an autopsy performed on the infant on Wednesday determined that the cause of death was one gunshot wound.
Authorities have not yet announced whether anyone will face charges over the child’s fatal shooting. An investigation is underway.
The number of children dying from gunshots, and especially from other children, has become astounding in America. According to Everytown For Gun Safety, this year alone, at least 63 unintentional shootings by kids have resulted in 25 fatalities and 39 injuries across the country.
