A homeowner shot and killed a 20-year-old woman after a car she was riding in mistakenly pulled into his driveway.
Twenty-year-old Kaylin Gillis was on her way to a friend’s house in Hebron, New York, with three other passengers on Saturday night when their vehicle turned into the driveway of Kevin Monahan, 65, by mistake.
When the driver realized they had gone to the wrong address, he tried to turn around, and Monahan came out and opened fire. He fired two rounds from his front porch, hitting Gillis.
The group then drove to Salem, a neighboring town, where they called 911. Emergency responders tried to resuscitate Gillis, but she was declared dead at the scene.
Washington County Sheriff Jeffrey Murphy spoke about the incident at a press conference on Monday, saying that when deputies got to Monahan’s home to investigate the shooting incident, the man refused to cooperate and wouldn’t leave his home for over an hour.
After a conversation with law enforcement, he was arrested on second-degree murder charges and booked into the Warren County Jail.
Sheriff Murphy described the incident as very sad. He told reporters that the young adults were looking for a friend’s house in the neighborhood and pulled up at this man’s house. Unfortunately, the 65-year-old man came out with a gun and fired at innocent people.
The Sheriff noted that no one left the vehicle, and there was no interaction between them and Monahan while they were in his driveway. Murphy emphasized that there was no threat from anyone in the car and no reason for Monahan to feel threatened.
The sheriff acknowledged that getting lost in the area is easy as it is quite rural, with many dirt roads. He also said that he knows the victim’s family and described the victim as a young girl who was killed too young.
The shooting followed an incident that has sparked rage all across the country. A black teenager in Kansas City, Missouri, 16-year-old Ralph Yarl, was shot twice by Andrew Lester, 84, a white homeowner, when he arrived at the wrong address to pick up his siblings.
