New York City saw the return of former President Donald Trump on April 13, 2023, as he faced a deposition in the business fraud lawsuit filed by New York District Attorney General Letitia James.
This legal drama has been brewing since September 2022, with the lawsuit accusing Trump and his kids of some shady dealings to secure loans and tax benefits. If found guilty, they’re looking at a whopping $250 million in damages and a ban from doing business in New York State.
Trump made his entrance at Trump Tower, offering a quick wave before dashing inside. Never one to stay quiet, he hopped on social media to slam Attorney General James, calling her “racist” and “TRUMP HATING.” He defended his company’s success and worldwide impact, expressing frustration at having to prove his innocence to someone he called a “LOWLIFE.” Trump even threw some shade at the judge involved in the case.
The deposition went down in the Manhattan Supreme Court, with the doors firmly shut to the public. James’ legal team spent hours grilling Trump under oath, all part of the discovery process in building their case against him and his family. The New York Times says this deposition is just one part of a larger effort to bring the Trump clan to justice.
At the heart of the lawsuit is a pattern of alleged fraud, including using false financial statements for personal gain, misusing Trump Organization assets, and playing fast and loose with property valuations to snag loans and insurance coverage. If found guilty, the Trump family could face restitution, damages, and penalties, along with the ban on New York business dealings.
Despite the legal troubles, Trump’s supporters turned up outside the court, chanting slogans and waving signs in support of their man. Trump himself continues to deny any wrongdoing, accusing James and others of engaging in a politically charged witch hunt.
This deposition is just one of the many legal battles Trump faces. With criminal investigations and other civil lawsuits stacking up, it’s going to be a bumpy ride for the former president.
