Two star Illinois high school athletes died in a sledding accident on Sunday, March 19, police said.
The teens, identified as Dylan Bazzell, 18, and Drew Fehr, 17, were on vacation at the Copper Mountain Ski Resort in Colorado for spring break when the tragic accident happened.
The Summit County Sheriff’s Office said the boys were riding tandem down a halfpipe at the resort when their sled toppled off a snowbank at the bottom. According to the Sheriff’s statement, the two landed forcefully on the hard ice below, causing them to suffer blunt-force trauma.
Paramedics arrived at around 8:35 pm and immediately started to perform CPR. However, their attempts were unsuccessful and they pronounced both teens dead at the scene.
Bazzell was the son of former all-star basketball player Darin Bazzell, who is currently the basketball coach at the high school. The teenager was in the Associated Press first-team all-state basketball selection.
Fehr’s mom, Susan Fehr, is a teacher at the Prairie Central School District. The boy was captain of the football team.
Copper Mountain Ski Resort President and General Manager Dustin Lyman said the halfpipe where the accident happened was closed at the time of the incident. He implored guests at the resort to observe the signs and warnings in order to prevent such tragic accidents in the future.
