A tragic incident at a Washington high school resulted in the loss of a student’s life.
According to Ben Ferney, superintendent of Cheney Public Schools, 16-year-old sophomore Brayden Bahme was attending a physical education class when the incident occurred. Described as a “tragic accident,” Bahme suffered severe injuries which led to his death.
Reports from fire officials revealed that Bahme had been impaled in the eye. The school later confirmed that he fell into a goalpost while running, resulting in the injury. Cheney Fire Chief Tom Jenkins refrained from providing specific details but said that the injury was fatal.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and discovered the unconscious student shortly before 2 pm on Thursday, April 27. They transported him to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries.
The family created a fundraising page to assist with funeral arrangements and immediate needs.
On Monday, May 1, Cheney High School held a moving candlelight vigil at Crunk’s Field in Cheney at 6 pm, honoring Brayden’s life. Attendees wore blue attire to commemorate his life and his love for fishing. The school encouraged participants to bring fishing items that would be donated to a youth fishing organization in Brayden’s honor.
According to the school’s statement, any remaining funds from the GoFundMe page, which has raised over $29,000, will be directed to the youth fishing program, carrying forward Brayden’s passion and memory.
