On April 29, the family of Rasheem Carter, a 25-year-old black man who was discovered dead and decapitated in Mississippi, led a demonstration in Taylorsville, Mississippi. The protest demanded justice for Carter following the discovery of additional human remains.
Carter’s relatives organized the protest, expressing their dissatisfaction with the police’s management of the case and accusing the authorities of hindering the investigation.
In October 2022, Rasheem’s mother, Tiffany Carter, who resides in the neighboring town of Fayette, reported her son missing after he phoned her, expressing fear due to being harassed by a group of white men in trucks. Tiffany recounted her son’s claim that he was pursued by three truckloads of white men intent on causing him harm. She encouraged him to seek refuge at the closest police station during a recent press conference.
Laurel Police Department Chief Tommy Cox, who oversaw the initial missing person case at the family’s behest, verified that Carter went to the Taylorsville Police Department twice before vanishing. A month later, his remains were discovered in a forested area close to Taylorsville. Although the authorities initially did not suspect any foul play, they continued to investigate the matter.
Ben Crump, a national civil rights attorney representing the Carter family, had previously revealed that Rasheem’s head was severed from his body, and some body parts were unaccounted for.
Carter’s relatives suspect his death was a “modern-day lynching” and are requesting further information from law enforcement. In March, the police announced there was no evidence of murder, proposing instead that animals might have been responsible for the damage to his body.
A deer camera captured images of Carter in the Mississippi woods on the day he was reported missing. Tiffany Carter, in an interview with Insider, expressed her belief that her son was desperately fighting for his life.
Attorney Crump released a statement on Thursday, announcing that the Mississippi Crime Lab had informed the family that another set of remains, discovered in February, were connected to Carter.
Carter’s family is now urging a federal investigation into his death.
