On Thursday, May 18, Congressional Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene made shockwaves in the political world as she introduced articles of impeachment against President Joe Biden.
The motion, a dramatic move that has stirred up a great deal of controversy, is based on her critique of President Biden’s approach to managing the surge in migrant crossings at the Mexico-US border.
In an incendiary statement, Greene lambasted President Biden for what she characterized as a severe abuse of his powers. She accused the President of deliberately compromising national security by neglecting to enforce immigration laws and failing to secure the border. She further alleged that the Biden administration’s lax approach had allowed millions of undocumented individuals from an estimated 160 countries to unlawfully enter the US, while simultaneously depriving the border patrol of vital resources and policies.
Greene’s accusations did not stop there. One of the articles of impeachment she introduced targets the increase in illegal border crossings, including the smuggling of dangerous narcotics, such as fentanyl, that she attributed directly to the Biden administration. It further alleged that the administration has violated the law by releasing undocumented immigrants into the United States’ interior. This situation contrasts sharply with the Trump-era Title 42 border policy, which expedited the expulsion of migrants without asylum hearings due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This policy continued under the Biden administration until its recent repeal.
However, Greene’s impeachment attempt is likely to hit a political wall as House Republicans do not possess the necessary majority to impeach President Biden. This reality mirrors earlier failed efforts to impeach the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, hinting at a recurring pattern of unsuccessful impeachment attempts on the Republican side.
The second article of impeachment put forward by Greene alleges that Biden has endangered Americans by allowing COVID-19-positive undocumented immigrants into the country without proper screening. The third article accuses President Biden of causing a national security crisis with his border policies, putting American citizens at risk.
Despite these allegations, President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas maintain that the border is closed and have consistently discouraged migrant crossings. The White House was swift to respond to Greene’s actions. A spokesperson highlighted the political motivations behind her impeachment attempt and drew attention to her previous controversial statements, including her support for defunding the FBI and her involvement in the aftermath of the January 6 insurrection.
