On Sunday, May 7, Meghan Markle went for a hike near her Montecito, California home with her close friends Heather Dorak and Markus Anderson. Paparazzi photographed her wearing Princess Diana’s iconic Cartier watch, which has been speculated to have been a tribute to her late mother-in-law, after the coronation of her father-in-law, King Charles III.
Meghan’s outfit included a black tank top, leggings, a fedora, Victoria Beckham sunglasses, and a bandana around her neck. Her choice of accessories, however, stole the spotlight. She was wearing Princess Diana’s Cartier watch and a diamond tennis bracelet, thought to have been a gift from King Charles to Diana when they married.
The Cartier watch is reportedly one of Meghan’s favorite pieces, and she wears it frequently. The Bentley & Skinner diamond tennis bracelet holds a special place in her heart as well. It has made several appearances, including during her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. Prince Harry used two of the bracelet’s diamonds to craft Meghan’s engagement ring.
Although it may seem unusual to wear such precious jewelry on a hike, some believe Meghan was sending a message.
Her husband, Prince Harry, made a brief appearance at King Charles III’s coronation, while Meghan stayed home to celebrate their son Archie’s fourth birthday. The couple’s presence at the UK coronation had been a topic of debate, but ultimately, Harry abruptly returned home before completion of the festivities in London, in order to be with his wife and kids.
Royal biographer Omid Scobie commented on Meghan’s decision not to attend the coronation during an interview on ITV’s “This Morning.” He explained that she chose to stay home to preserve “her peace.”
