Searchers discovered the lifeless body of a four-year-old autistic girl who had gone missing from her family’s rental home in Florida.
The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office reported the unfortunate discovery of Evelyn K. Beer’s body near the water’s edge, not far from the rental home in Port Charlotte, Florida. Evelyn had been declared missing at 1 a.m. on Friday, June 2, and her body was located six hours later.
Air units and a trained bloodhound were part of the expansive search operation conducted 30 miles north of Fort Myers. Claudette Smith, the spokesperson for the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office, has stated that the date of the autopsy remains undecided at this point.
Evelyn was found during an intensive search involving a boat from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, as reported by the sheriff’s office. The young girl had reportedly strayed from the vacation rental property affiliated with Expedia Group, where her family had temporarily moved after their displacement due to Hurricane Ian last September. The family would usually use a deadbolt lock at their own home to accommodate Evelyn’s autism, a security feature unfortunately absent in the rental home.
Audio records of a 911 call from Evelyn’s distressed mother, also named Evelyn, were made public by the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office. Amidst her audible distress, Evelyn’s mother described her daughter as wearing only a diaper, with long brown hair tied in a ponytail.
Evelyn’s body was discovered shortly after 7 a.m., as reported by Smith in a press briefing. She was found behind homes on Barksdale Street, Port Charlotte, near a canal. Steve Stotler, a local resident, recalled the commotion caused by helicopters at 4 a.m., before being informed by police about the ongoing search for the young girl.
