A newlywed man tragically drowned during his honeymoon in Hawaii.
Steven Phan and his wife, Brittany, were in the midst of their post-wedding festivities in Honolulu on June 1 when disaster struck. Phan decided to go snorkeling at Electric Beach, but disappeared under the water and did not resurface.
Upon seeing the incident, a spear fisherman acted immediately, managing to bring the drowning man to the beach. CPR was started instantly by bystanders and continued until emergency services arrived. Despite these efforts, however, Phan could not be saved.
In a further blow to the grieving couple, thieves used the ensuing chaos as an opportunity to steal all their personal effects. The list of stolen items includes their cell phones, wallets, cash, and the car they had rented. This devastating series of events was detailed on a GoFundMe page, which was established to provide support for Phan’s widow.
Reacting to public calls for increased safety measures, the Honolulu authorities have announced plans to set up a new lifeguard tower at Electric Beach. This move comes in the wake of community concerns about the lack of sufficient first responders at the city’s beaches, brought to the fore by Steven Phan’s tragic death.
