A 22-year-old pregnant woman was targeted in a horrific shooting incident while in her car.
The attack happened at 11:20 am on Thursday, June 15, on 37th Street SE, Washington DC, when two armed individuals drove up in a white four-door sedan and started firing at the young woman.
Samya Gill, the victim of the heinous crime, was eight months pregnant and in the vehicle with the soon-to-be father of her child. Despite receiving gunshot wounds, he managed to drive a mile from the crime scene to Minnesota Avenue and Dix Street, seeking assistance. After being rushed to a local hospital, Gill underwent an emergency C-section but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries. The infant, named Zailey, is currently in critical condition, and the father is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.
Gill’s mother, who wished to remain anonymous, said that her daughter was a model and online boutique owner. She said, if the child survives, she will raise her.
The police have disclosed surveillance images of the suspects – one dressed in a white jacket and hoodie and the other in darker apparel. While the shooting seems to be targeted, the motive is yet to be determined.
Authorities are offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects.
This shooting is part of an increase in homicides in Washington, DC, which are up 16% compared to the same period in 2022.
