A 24-year-old Brazilian soccer player was killed in a shocking incident.
On June 19 at around 4 p.m., an SUV crashed into the Lakeland, Florida, house Yuri dos Santos Vasconcelos was staying in, according to official reports.
The Lakeland Police Department said that the driver of the 2016 Dodge Durango failed to stop at a stop sign, hit two signposts before crashing into the house, and struck the victim, who was in the kitchen at the time. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver and a passenger in the SUV did not sustain injuries, nor did two other occupants of the house. The authorities have not disclosed whether charges have been filed against the driver.
Vasconcelos, a native of Palmeira dos Indios in Brazil’s state of Alagoas, had been in the United States since around 2021. He initially played soccer for Eastern Oklahoma State College before transferring to Faulkner University in Montgomery, Alabama in January 2023. At the time of his death, he was playing for Lakeland United FC’s summer league team.
Tauan Salgado, director of soccer for Lakeland United FC, praised Vasconcelos’s character, ethics, and passion for the game. He mentioned that Yuri was an integral part of the team due to his hard work and selfless playing style, particularly in defense. Gabriel de Queiroz, head coach for men’s soccer at Faulkner University, acknowledged Vasconcelos’s maturity and sense of purpose.
Lakeland United FC is set to play a game in Naples on June 27 and will host a farewell event in Vasconcelos’s honor. His coaches believe his legacy will continue to inspire others.
