What was intended to be a joyous occasion ended in tragedy when a chartered bus carrying guests from a wedding overturned, resulting in the deaths of ten people and injuries to 25 others.
The vehicle, responsible for transporting 53 wedding guests back to their lodging after the reception, met with a calamity at a traffic roundabout on Wine Country Drive, in Greta, Australia, shortly after 11:30 p.m.
New South Wales Police Assistant Commissioner Tracy Chapman reported that the driver was apprehended at the scene of the accident. He faces charges of dangerous driving resulting in death, on ten counts. Though Chapman declined to confirm whether the accident was speed-induced on the foggy road, she indicated the presence of adequate proof to back the charges.
The guests had just concluded celebrations at the Wandin Estate Winery in New South Wales and were en route to their lodgings in Singleton when the crash occurred, according to Chapman. The injured parties were sent to nearby hospitals.
Remarkably, 18 passengers present on the bus escaped unscathed.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese extended condolences and assured governmental aid to the victims and their kin. He emphasized the unfortunate irony of the situation, pointing out the bus was hired to ensure the safety of guests and avert drunk driving.
The incident happened in the picturesque Hunter Valley, famous for its vineyards and favored as a wedding venue. A participant described the wedding as a “fairytale.”
Visuals from the scene presented the overturned bus atop a distorted guardrail. Community members paid their respects by leaving flowers at the crash site.
