The son of a former Red Sox first baseman is alleged to have killed his eight-year-old son before taking his own life on Friday, June 2 at their Massachusetts home.
The police discovered the apparent murder-suicide involving George Scott III, son of former Red Sox player George Scott, during a wellness check at the player’s son’s New Bedford residence around 8 am.
According to the Bristol District Attorney’s office, George Scott III, 54, and his son, Dante Hazard, were found deceased inside the home. The investigation suggests that Scott killed his son before ending his own life. The medical examiner will confirm the specific details, including the method used.
George Scott III, who was living with his son in the Phillips Road home, was the son of former Red Sox star George Scott, renowned for his nine-season tenure with the team during the 1960s and 1970s.
Neighbor Courtney Colombo expressed her shock and disbelief upon learning about the incident, describing George Scott III as a friendly neighbor. Colombo mentioned occasionally seeing Dante playing outside.
Two weeks before this incident, investigators had searched the home in connection with the disappearance of Lisa Hazard, the young victim’s mother. Lisa Hazard has been missing since March 2019, and the case remains unsolved. George Scott III had been identified as a person of interest in the investigation.
George Scott III had sought to follow in his father’s footsteps in baseball and other activities. In an interview, he expressed admiration for his father, George “Boomer” Scott, a former three-time All-Star and eight-time Gold Glove winner who had an illustrious career with the Red Sox from 1966 to 1979.
