Four people were killed and seven others were injured as a result of boulders rolling down the hills during intense rainfall, crushing three vehicles.
The tragic event unfolded on Monday, July 10, in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, India. A rockslide brought about by a torrential downpour caused boulders to roll downhill and crush three vehicles, one of which held a group of pilgrims from Indore, Madhya Pradesh, who had just concluded their pilgrimage at Gangotri in Uttarakhand.
The vehicles were traveling near the hill when the massive rocks fell, hitting the vehicles and causing extensive damage. A bus was particularly affected, with one side completely destroyed by the force of the rockslide. The two other vehicles were also heavily damaged.
There is a solemn atmosphere at the scene, with the vehicles reduced to a pile of wreckage. A woman is among the deceased, and one of the injured is currently in a critical condition.
As the monsoon season continues, Uttarakhand has joined a growing list of northern Indian states affected by the weather phenomenon. The heavy rainfall has resulted in numerous landslides throughout hilly areas and the collapse of several bridges.
In response to these extreme weather conditions, schools in Dehradun, the state capital, have been ordered to remain closed until further notice. Meanwhile, in the nearby state of Himachal Pradesh, ongoing rainfall has resulted in the death of 30 people in different incidents related to the rain.
The sight of bridges being washed away and vehicles being submerged by floodwaters is a stark reminder of the destruction caused by the continuous rainfall in the region.
