A fire in a retirement home known as the “Home of the Spouses” in Milan, Italy resulted in six fatalities and nearly 80 injuries, according to Italian authorities.
The blaze erupted from a room on the first floor of the residential building situated in the Corvetto neighborhood.
Two residents of the home, which accommodates 167 seniors, died from burns in their respective rooms, reported Mayor Giuseppe Sala, who was present at the scene. Additionally, four others met their deaths from inhaling toxic smoke generated by the fire. The Mayor emphasized the severity of the incident but also pointed out that the tragedy could have been far worse.
In the early hours of the morning, just after 1 am, firefighters arrived at the scene. The flames were quickly put under control, preventing a spread to other areas of the building. However, the swift response couldn’t stave off the creation of a large volume of toxic fumes.
Fire Chief Nicola Miceli noted that the operation was notably complicated due to the thick smoke which reduced visibility and the mobility constraints of many residents. Around 80 people, many wheelchair-bound, were successfully evacuated from the burning structure, and another 80 taken to the hospital.
Local resident Lucia applauded the efforts of the rescuers, describing how the elderly occupants had to use clothing to protect against the fumes. Luca Cari, the spokesperson for the firefighters, stated that the fire is under investigation. Initial indications suggest the cause was likely an accident.
