In a series of early morning attacks on Sunday, July 2, three businesses in Washington, DC were targeted with explosive devices and a Molotov cocktail.
The incidents took place over the course of 15 minutes, and targeted a Truist Bank, a Nike retail location, and a Safeway grocery store. The Nike store is notably situated just a few blocks away from the US Supreme Court and Capitol buildings.
At around 4:30 a.m., the first explosive device was set off near an ATM on the sidewalk by the Truist Bank. Six minutes later, at 4:36 a.m., a second explosive was detonated in front of the Nike store on H Street. Finally, at 4:45 a.m., a Molotov cocktail-like object was thrown through a window at the Safeway store on 40th Street.
Luckily, no injuries were reported due to the timing of these attacks. The Metro police have concluded that the aim was to damage the businesses rather than to cause harm to individuals. As of now, no details about the suspect or the motive behind the attacks have been disclosed by the authorities.
An ongoing investigation into these incidents is being led by the Metro Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. A reward of up to $10,000 has been offered by the DC police for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
