A 30-year-old passenger vanished after reportedly jumping off a Carnival Cruise ship on it’s way to Florida. The incident took place approximately 95 miles off the coast of Melbourne, Florida, leaving both authorities and the cruise line perplexed about what happened.
When family members of Jaylen Hill alerted the ship staff of his absence all day on Sunday, July 23, a swift review of the ship’s surveillance footage was initiated. Footage revealed Hill taking a plunge from the side of the ship.
Upon conducting a detailed search on board and reviewing the video evidence, it was confirmed that Hill had indeed jumped overboard. The ship’s operator promptly alerted the authorities and was instructed to continue toward its scheduled port in Jacksonville.
The Carnival Elation ship, having concluded a four-day journey to the Bahamas, arrived in Jacksonville on Monday, July 24, under a cloud of gloom due to the incident.
As the search for Jaylen Hill carried on, the Coast Guard mobilized significant resources including the 87-foot cutter Tarpon from St. Petersburg, a Hercules aircraft from Clearwater, and an Ocean Sentry aircraft from Miami. However, search efforts were suspended on Monday evening as the likelihood of locating Hill and fully understanding the incident faded.
