An incident took place on a ferry voyage, resulting in the death of a seven-year-old boy and his mother.
Swedish authorities are currently investigating the case as a possible homicide, although no suspects have been identified thus far. Prosecutor Stina Brindmark said that the investigation aims to uncover the details surrounding the incident that occurred on a trip from Sweden to Poland. Oessur Jarleivson Hilduberg, head of the Danish Maritime Accident Investigation Board, said: “Our investigation showed quite clearly that it was not an accident.”
According to reports, the child fell from the Stena Spirit ferry, prompting his mother to jump into the sea in an attempt to rescue him. The Swedish Maritime Administration estimated that the boy fell from a height of nearly 65 feet. Onlookers aboard the ferry were distressed as a helicopter was dispatched to locate and save the missing people. Both the Polish mother and son were later pronounced dead after being found and airlifted to a Swedish hospital.
According to reports, the two remained in the water about an hour before being rescued. The Polish police confirmed the deaths following unsuccessful resuscitation efforts.
The Stena Spirit ferry, carrying 310 passengers, was en route from Karlskrona in Sweden to Gdynia in Poland when the unfortunate incident occurred. Stena Line spokesperson, Agnieszka Zembrzycka mentioned that there is currently no information suggesting any malfunction of the ferry, and they are cooperating with the authorities in their investigation.
Stefan Elfstrom, a spokesman for Stena Line, stressed that the crew responded quickly to the man-overboard alert. He also disclosed that belongings belonging to the victims were discovered, though the individuals themselves remained missing. Swedish police have contacted Polish passengers, seeking any information that may help shed light on the circumstances leading to the incident.
