The 19-year-old grandson of esteemed actor Robert De Niro was discovered dead in a lower Manhattan apartment, in what authorities suspect may be a drug overdose.
The presence of drug paraphernalia and an unidentified white powdery substance found near Leandro Rodriguez’s body has led authorities to this assumption.
Law enforcement sources disclosed that the teenager was discovered unresponsive in a chair on Sunday afternoon. Leandro’s passing was confirmed publicly by his mother, Drena De Niro, via a poignant statement on Instagram. Robert De Niro, in an expression of his deep sorrow and appreciation for the outpouring of support, requested respect for the family’s privacy during their time of grief.
Leandro was remembered as a “beautiful sweet angel” by his mother, Drena, who is the oldest daughter of Robert De Niro and his former wife, Diahnne Abbott. A definitive cause of death is yet to be determined.
A concerned friend, who had not heard from Leandro for several days, found his body. The apartment building’s doorman, who saw Leandro regularly, had no knowledge of his familial ties to the acclaimed actor. Leandro was taking care of the apartment for someone else at the time of his death.
The unexpected loss has shocked family, friends, and staff alike. Carlos Rodriguez, Leandro’s father, was seen arriving at Drena’s apartment, noticeably upset.
Leandro held a few acting credits, including roles with his mother in films like “A Star Is Born.” His death occurred mere months after his grandfather welcomed his seventh child with girlfriend Tiffany Chen. De Niro previously adopted Drena and has additional children from prior marriages.
